British to Impose Strictest Anti-Doping Rules Yet for Athletes

The British Amateur Athletic Board will implement one of the world’s strictest anti-doping policies, which will include random tests for athletes that could disqualify anyone refusing to take them from representing Britain in international competition.

“We would like to think Britain is taking a fresh lead in the field of drug abuse and that other nations will follow suit,” board secretary Neil Cooper said Tuesday.

British athletes hoping to compete internationally, including at the Olympic Games and world championships, will be asked to sign a special register pledging their willingness to be tested for drugs--at any time of the year.

The Breeders’ Cup races will return to Southern California in 1986, then be held in Kentucky and Florida the following years, directors announced in Lexington, Ky. The race tracks will be named at a later date.

The inaugural multimillion-dollar, seven-race card was held at Hollywood Park last fall, and is slated for Aqueduct in New York next November.

Businessman Michael Shapiro is suing the owner of the Kansas City Royals for more than $50 million, alleging breach of contract for selling a 49% interest in the team to a Memphis developer.

Shapiro contends that Royals’ owner Ewing Kauffman sold him a $100,000 option to purchase a 49% interest in the American League team two years ago for $10 million.

Rams’ defensive back Michael Pleasant was reported in stable condition in the intensive care unit at Riverside Community Hospital after suffering head injuries and burns in a traffic accident.

The Highway Patrol reported that Pleasant’s car was hit head-on by a wrong-way driver on the 91 Freeway in Riverside Monday night. Gary Branton, 41, of San Bernardino, the driver of the other car, was reported in stable condition.

Fans will be barred from high school basketball games in the Oakland Athletic League today because of a brawl last week in which a player was injured.

The league will revert to its usual format Friday, officials said, but if violence persists, they could ban spectators for the rest of the season.

Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski is infuriated at a North Carolina State speech professor, Harry Munn, for accusing Atlantic Coast Conference basketball coaches of recruiting athletes incapable of graduating.

“It’s really a dumb thing to say--really stupid,” Krzyzewski said. “He’s not in a position to comment on the whole ACC.”

The Boston Celtics confirmed that they have made an offer to free-agent guard Ray Williams, who played out his option with the New York Knicks last season.

Celtics’ General Manager Jan Volk said Williams and his agent, Fred Slaughter, have “got the parameters of an offer,” The Boston Globe reported Tuesday.

The 1989 United States Open golf tournament will be held at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., the U.S. Golf Assn. announced.

The 1956 Open, won by Dr. Cary Middlecoff, and the 1968 Open, won by Lee Trevino, were held at Oak Hill.

Coach Walt Michaels of the New Jersey Generals said rookie quarterback Doug Flutie will play “two-thirds or three quarters” of Sunday’s United States Football League exhibition game against the Orlando Renegades.
