College Basketball Roundup : Tar Heels Deny Driesell His 500th Win

Maryland Coach Lefty Driesell was denied his 500th career victory Wednesday when North Carolina turned a 21-point performance by Brad Daugherty into a 60-54 victory over the Terrapins at College Park, Md.

The victory moved the Tar Heels, ranked 12th and 13th in the wire-service polls, into second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 6-3 record, one-half game behind Georgia Tech. North Carolina is 19-5 overall.

Maryland, ranked 19th and 20th, dropped to 19-8 overall and 5-4 in the ACC.

North Carolina trailed, 28-18, with 7:08 remaining in the first half, but closed out with a 17-4 streak to take a 35-32 lead by the intermission.

Maryland fell behind by seven points early in the second half, then rallied to go ahead, 50-49, before a basket by Warren Martin put the Tar Heels ahead for keeps, 51-50.

Steve Hale had 12 points, 6 assists and 12 rebounds for North Carolina.

Oklahoma 104, Iowa St. 76--The Sooners, paced by two-time All-American Wayman Tisdale’s 33 points, assured themselves of their fourth consecutive 20-win season by overwhelming the Cyclones at Norman, Okla.

Tisdale, the Big Eight Conference’s career scoring leader, missed his first four shots and went to the bench at 12:03 with Oklahoma leading, 11-10.

The 6-9 junior returned three minutes later and scored 19 points during the next eight minutes to help the Sooners to a 48-32 halftime lead.

Oklahoma, ranked fourth and fifth, improved to 20-4 and 9-0 in the Big Eight. Iowa State, which fell to 16-9 overall and 4-5 in the conference, was led by Gary Thompkins’ 14 points.

SMU 81, Texas A&M; 79--Guard Butch Moore hit his first nine shots and scored 25 points as the ninth-ranked Mustangs snapped a three-game losing streak with the Southwest Conference win at Dallas.

The victory kept the Mustangs (19-5 overall) in first place in the conference with a 9-3 record. The Aggies (15-7) fell to 7-4.

Memphis St. 68, Cincinnati 55--All-American Keith Lee scored 18 points as the Tigers, ranked third and fifth, led from start to finish at Cincinnati.

The victory improved Memphis State’s overall record to 18-2 and its Metro Conference mark to 8-1. Cincinnati, 13-10, sank to 6-4 in conference play, despite a career-high 26 points from Myron Hughes.

Virginia Commonwealth 67, Alabama Birmingham 53--The Rams moved into a tie with the 19th-ranked Blazers for first place in the Sun Belt Conference with the victory at Richmond, Va.

Rolando Lamb scored 26 points and Mike Schlegel added 22 as Virginia Commonwealth improved to 19-4 overall and 9-2 in conference play. Alabama Birmingham fell to 21-6, 9-2.

Duke 94, Stetson 51--Reserve freshman forward Kevin Strickland scored 19 points as the Blue bDevils, ranked fourth and seventh, easily won the nonconference game at Durham, N.C.

Mark Alarie added 18 points for Duke (18-4, 6-4), while Jay Daniels led the Hatters (10-13) with 17.

Kentucky 51, Alabama 48--The Wildcats (14-8, 9-4) retained a share of the Southeastern Conference lead with their fifth straight victory at Lexington, Ky. Alabama lost its third straight to fall to 14-8, 6-7.

Minnesota 73, Michigan St. 64--Freshmen Todd Alexander and George Williams combined for 39 points to spark the Gophers to the Big Ten victory at Minneapolis.

Alexander scored 23 points and Williams added a season-high 16 points with nine rebounds as the Gophers broke a four-game losing streak and improved 12-9 and 5-6.

The Spartans, who got 27 points from Sam Vincent, fell to 15-7 and 6-6.

Vanderbilt 69, Georgia 68--Guard Phil Cox sank a 15-foot baseline jumper with three seconds remaining as the Commodores halted an 11-game losing streak with the Southeastern Conference upset win at Nashville, Tenn.

The loss cost the Bulldogs, 16-6 and 8-5, a share of the league lead with Kentucky. The victory was the first since Jan. 2 for the Commodores, 9-13 overall and 2-11.

San Jose State 57, UC Santa Barbara 54--Senior guard Mike Dixon sank two free throws with 19 seconds to play to secure the Spartans’ Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. victory over the Gauchos at San Jose.

San Jose improved its PCAA record to 7-7, 12-11 overall. Santa Barbara dropped to 7-6 in conference, 11-11 overall.
