Padres Sell Right-Hander Harris to Rangers
The Padres sold the contract of right-hander Greg Harris to the Texas Rangers on Wednesday. The purchase price was not disclosed.
“No, I wasn’t surprised,” Harris said. “I found out a week ago the Padres were trying to trade me.”
Harris, 29, had filed for arbitration, but agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Padres before being acquired by the Rangers.
“I’m happy the way things worked out,” Harris said. “I got a chance to pitch for a winning ballclub. I was pretty consistent last year. It was great experience pitching in the World Series and I pitched pretty well.”
Harris was 2-1 with the Padres with a 2.78 earned-run average in 19 regular-season appearences. He made one appearance in the National League Championship Series and one in the World Series. He pitched 5 scoreless innings in Game 3 of the World Series against Detroit.
Harris spent the first half of the 1984 season with the Montreal Expos and Indianapolis Indians of the American Assn. He was 0-1 with a 2.04 ERA in 15 games with the Expos before going to Indianapolis on June 6. Harris was 4-4 with a 4.43 ERA with the Indians before the Padres acquired him on July 21 in a trade for infielder Al Newman.
Harris’ lifetime record in two and a half major-league seasons is 7-13 with a 4.21 ERA in 85 games.
