Cleveland went ahead, 96-91, with 7:31 to play, but Toney hit a three-point field goal and Julius Erving a basket to tie it at 96-96 with 6:21 left.

The Cavaliers again took the lead, 100-97, only to watch two free throws by Malone give Philadelphia a 101-100 advantage with 4:18 left. Phil Hubbard tied it at 101-101 at the 4:07 mark.

The lead changed three more times and the score was tied twice, the last at 105-105 with 1:56 left.

Hubbard, who had 13 points, made a free throw but Erving hit a basket to put Philadelphia ahead, 107-106, with 57 seconds left.

Starting with a field goal by World B. Free with 40 seconds to go, the Cavaliers scored the final six points of the game, clinching it on a pair of free throws by Hubbard and two more by Ben Poquette.

New Jersey 124, Detroit 123--Micheal Ray Richardson scored 14 of his game-high 30 points in the fourth quarter, including a free throw with just two seconds to play, as the Nets edged the Pistons at East Rutherford, N.J.

Richardson hit a three-point goal at the 59-second mark to tie the game and then got the ball back for the Nets by slapping it out of bounds off Isiah Thomas’ foot. Mike O’Koren gave New Jersey the lead with a 20-foot jumper with 23 seconds to play. But Thomas, who had 14 assists, fed Kent Benson for a layup with 17 seconds on the clock, enabling Detroit to tie the game at 123.

The Nets then ran the clock down until Richardson, who finished with 11 assists and seven rebounds, was fouled by Thomas and hit one of his two free throws to give New Jersey the victory.

Indiana 114, Chicago 96--Herb Williams scored 24 points and Steve Stipanovich added 23 points and 15 rebounds as the Pacers snapped a five-game losing streak at Chicago.

Phoenix 126, Dallas 103--Larry Nance scored 23 points and James Edwards 21 as the Suns broke a 10-game road losing streak with the victory at Dallas.

The Mavericks got 25 points from Mark Aguirre in losing their second straight.

Denver 129, San Antonio 119--The Nuggets’ Alex English and the Spurs’ George Gervin each scored 39 points, but Bill Hanzlik’s back-to-back jumpers in the middle of the fourth quarter put the Nuggets ahead for good at Denver.
