Young Runs, Passes Express Past Breakers
Steve Young threw for one touchdown and ran for another to lead the Express to a 38-17 win over the Portland Breakers Saturday in a USFL exhibition game at Pierce College in Woodland Hills.
Young completed 13 of 20 passes for 152 yards. He ran for another 44 yards on four carries, including a 27-yard touchdown run, the first of the game early in the first quarter.
After quarterback Doug Woodward tied it 7-7 for the Breakers with a one-yard run midway through the period, Young put the Express ahead for good when he hit wide receiver JoJo Townsell on a 16-yard scoring play.
Portland kicker Tim Mazzetti made it 14-10 with a 39-yard field goal, but the Express scored 17 unanswered points to put the game away.
The Express took a 17-10 halftime lead when Mel Gray scored on a nine-yard run. Tony Zendejas’ 30-yard field goal and an eight-yard touchdown pass from Frank Seurer to David Hersey gave the Express 10 third-quarter points.
Portland added a touchdown in the third quarter when quarterback Matt Robinson hit Frank Lockett on a 23-yard pass. Seurer closed the scoring in the fourth quarter with a five-yard pass to Robert Alexander.
