Centennial Dinner for Baptist Church

USC President Dr. James H. Zumberge is chairman of the Centennial Dinner of the Second Baptist Church on Friday in the Los Angeles Room of the Century Plaza.

Both the university and the church have served the Los Angeles community 100 years. The occasion honors Pastor Thomas Kilgore Jr., who’s retiring after 21 years as senior pastor.

Proceeds will benefit the community ministries and the USC Ebonics support group for minority scholarships.

Steve Allen heads entertainment for the 14th annual dinner dance of the Los Angeles chapter of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation on Sunday at the Century Plaza.

Playwright Neil Simon will be presented the Humanitarian Award, according to Darlene Chernove, president of the local chapter.

Every buyer of a table for 10 gets an invitation to a special “Breakfast at Tiffany” on March 3 with Rococo catering. Tickets are $175 each.

Eighteen debutantes will be presented Saturday by the Philoptohos Society (of St. Sophia Cathedral) in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton, says Mrs. Nicholas P. Bissias of La Canada.

Earlier they were honored at a tea in the Beverly Hills home of Mrs. Christ Krantz.

Mrs. Alex J. Doumak of Malibu is ball chairman, according to Mrs. Theodore A. Lambros. Proceeds go to the Cooley’s Anemia Fund, cancer, epilepsy, the St. Sophia Youth Camp, the Hellenic College and Theological Seminary in Brookline, Mass., and St. Basil’s Orphanage in New York.

Debutantes are Misses Georgianne Alfieris, Angela Bicos, Constance G. Chickos, Lynn P. Elefther, Cindi Harrison, Sandra Kanavaros, Melina Kaplanis, Christina Kruse, Frances Kunelis, Tanya Mallis, Sophia Mandas, Jennifer Pastis, Patricia Sarantos, Georgia G. Stamos, Danielle Tavoularis, Stephanie Xanthos, Lea Zafiris and Marie Zogopoulos.

Dulcie Harris and a whole group of Pasadenans and San Marinans, including William Solaini, are behind the private gathering of backers and friends who want to see The Company, produced and directed by Jessica Myerson, ensconced in the Crown City. It’s a group of 10 young improvisational actors and musicians.

Thus, Lorenzo Music (the voice behind Garfield, the cat) is guest host Sunday at the Ice House “for mingle time, show time, nuts and bolts time, commitment time and goodby time.”

“Hooray for Hollywood” was the theme for the Founder’s Day luncheon honoring the late Mrs. Hancock Banning as founder and Assistance League president for 27 years. Councilwoman Peggy Stevenson discussed the status of Hollywood today.

The Women for Shaare Zedek Medical Center Jerusalem host a luncheon Sunday in the new Tower of the Century Plaza to honor Diana Streisand Kind, mother of Barbra Streisand. Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky is keynoter.

Delta Zeta Lamplighters of Southern California plan their “Flame Fantasy” luncheon and fashion show Saturday at the Beverly Wilshire. Gunn Trigere of Beverly Hills is presenting fashions. Nanette Fabray draws the winning grand prize, a round-trip to Paris for two.

Ruth Wilt is general chairman. The sorority supports the deaf, particularly the House Ear Institute of Southern California.

Sybil Brand receives another “Woman of the Year” Award (how many does this make?) from the Ida Mayer Cummings Auxiliary of Jewish Homes for the Aging at its 56th Celebrity Ball on Sunday at the Beverly Wilshire.

Milton Berle receives the May Mann Award. Selma Udko is chairman, assisted by Rose Finer.

Marymount High School plans its Blue & White Ball on Saturday in the Crystal Room of the Beverly Hills Hotel. Julio Proietto is chairman.

Proceeds will be used for scholarships and for maintenance of the 50-year-old Catholic private girls school, a historical landmark.
