Times Gymnastics Meet at UCLA Tonight

Share

Five of the nation’s top 10 college teams, including defending NCAA champion UCLA, are in the six-school field that will compete in the UCLA/Times Invitational men’s gymnastics meet tonight at Pauley Pavilion.

Tony Pineda, who represented Mexico in the Summer Olympics, and Rob Campbell, a U.S. national team member, head the Bruins, who are ranked No. 7.

Pineda’s pommel horse routine was the highlight of last year’s Invitational. The 5-2 Pineda finished 23rd in the all-around at the Olympics and was eighth in the NCAA meet as a freshman. Arizona State, ranked No. 3, is favored on the basis of its 1985 record. Led by twins Dennis and Dan Hayden, both national team members, the undefeated Sun Devils have beaten seven opponents, including UCLA.

The six teams--the others are Nebraska (No. 4), New Mexico (No. 6), Minnesota (No. 9) and Illinois (No. 15)--will perform simultaneously, rotating to different events throughout the competition, which starts at 7:30 p.m.
