Tennis Roundup : Lloyd, Mandlikova Reach Semifinals at Oakland
Top-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd and defending champion Hana Mandlikova easily advanced to the semifinals of a $150,000 tournament at Oakland Friday.
Lloyd breezed past fifth-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany, 6-2, 6-2, and Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia knocked off second-seeded Wendy Turnbull of Australia, 6-3, 6-4.
In the semifinals, Lloyd will face Zina Garrison, who defeated Barbara Potter, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, and Mandlikova will meet countrywoman Helena Sukova, who beat eighth-seeded Andrea Temesvari of Hungary, 7-6, 6-2.
At Toronto, Wojtek Fibak of Poland upset fifth-seeded Gene Mayer, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the $200,000 Molson Light Challenge tournament.
Also advancing were the tournament’s top three seeded players, Anders Jarryd of Sweden, Eliot Teltscher and Kevin Curren of South Africa.
Jarryd, seeded No. 1, defeated Peter Fleming, 7-6, 6-0; Teltscher, seeded No. 2, stopped No. 6-seeded Ramesh Krishnan of India, 6-2, 6-4, and Curren, seeded No. 3, eliminated Bud Schultz, 6-2, 6-0.
In today’s semifinals, it’s Fibak against Jarryd and Teltscher vs. Curren.
