Overriding Mayor Barbara Doerr’s veto, the City Council voted Monday to grant preliminary approval to a one-year extension of a conditional-use permit for the planned Inn at King Harbor.

The present permit--held by Marina Cove Ltd.--expires May 21. According to city Harbor Director Sheila Schoettger, the firm has “been subjected to delays over which it had little or no control” and additional time is required to comply with all California Coastal Commission conditions.

Doerr, in vetoing the extension, reiterated her objections to the scope of the eight-story inn project. But her veto was overridden 4 to 1.

The city’s municipal code requires that applicants for permit extensions submit proof of “an unusual hardship.” The council’s final approval is pending presentation of such proof next week.
