Disorientation Delays Schroeder’s Release
Artificial heart patient William J. Schroeder’s pending release from Humana Hospital Audubon was delayed a “week or two” after he began suffering again from “periods of disorientation,” hospital officials said Wednesday.
Seven small areas of Schroeder’s brain were damaged by a stroke on Dec. 13, and he has had difficulty with coordination and speech since then.
Dr. William C. DeVries, who implanted Schroeder’s mechanical heart, said doctors would continue to analyze the “brief periods of disorientation” that Schroeder has experienced since early January, according to a hospital spokesman.
Schroeder occasionally stares vacantly into space and does not respond to his surroundings, his doctors have said.
