Penn State football Coach Joe Paterno violated NCAA recruiting rules by attending the recent signing of a New Jersey high school player to a national letter of intent, the university acknowledged Wednesday.

In a copyright story in the York Daily Record, Penn State Athletic Director Jim Tarman said the school “inadvertently violated” the rule when Paterno appeared at the Montclair, N.J., home of Quintus McDonald when the linebacker signed his national letter of intent Friday.

David Berst, director of enforcement for the NCAA, said that because the violation was of an “isolated, minor or inadvertent variety,” the NCAA probably would not start an investigation.

McDonald, reached at home, declined comment. He said he still plans to go to Penn State but is not 100% sure.
