College Baseball : Anderson's Slam Carries UCI Past Fullerton, 10-8

Brady Anderson's grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the UC Irvine baseball team to a 10-8 victory in the first game of a doubleheader over Cal State Fullerton Saturday at Irvine.

The second game was called because of darkness and will be replayed at a later date.

With Fullerton leading, 2-1, with two outs in the third inning, Adam Ging walked and advanced to second on a single by Don Davis. Bob Perry followed with a single that scored Ging.

Steve Morgan hit a three-run home run to right-center field to give the Anteaters (9-9-1) a 5-2 lead.

In the Irvine seventh, Perry singled and Mike Fay and Ed Clark both walked. Anderson then hit his home run, his fourth of the season.

Fullerton scored three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to make it close.

In the second game, the Anteaters scored eight runs in the first inning, but the Titans (9-9-1) rallied with four in the second and nine in the third.

The game was called in the fourth inning with the Titans leading, 13-8.

David Trussell (1-0) was the winning pitcher in the first game, and Bo Kent picked up the save for Irvine. Mike Belanger (3-1) took the loss for Fullerton.

In other nonconference action:

Chapman 9-2, Southern California College 1-1--The Panthers improved to 8-6 with a nonconference sweep of the Vanguards at Hart Park. Chapman's Rob Glisson limited SCC to four hits in the first game, and reliever Chip Peterson threw one pitch to win the second game.

In the nightcap, with the game tied at 1-1, the Vanguards had the go-ahead run thrown out at the plate in the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the inning, Chapman loaded the bases with one out. Ivan Camacho grounded to SCC third baseman Dave Turney, whose error on the ball allowed Mike Muraca to score the winning run.

Chapman's Dave Swatek was 7 for 8 with 3 RBIs and 2 doubles in the two games. Chapman hosts LaVerne at Hart Park, Tuesday at 7 p.m.
