A Dana Point man was shot in the legs by an Orange County sheriff’s deputy after lunging from hiding at the officer, who was searching for the man to arrest him on outstanding warrants, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said Sunday.

Hector Augusto Ocampo, 26, suffered wounds in both legs from a single shot, which passed through one leg and hit the other, said Sgt. Rich Moscowitz.

Two sheriff’s deputies, whose names were not released, went to Ocampo’s Dana Point home shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday to serve him with a felony warrant issued in Idaho on weapons and narcotics charges and with an Orange County Superior Court warrant for failure to appear on other charges, Moscowitz said. He did not know the nature of the Orange County charges.

The deputies entered the home and began searching for Ocampo, Moscowitz said.

Ocampo was hiding in one of the rooms and lunged at one deputy when the officer entered the room, he said. The deputy fired a single shot with his service revolver, said Moscowitz, who knew no further details of the shooting.

Ocampo was treated and released at UCI Medical Center in Orange, then was booked into Orange County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.
