3.1 Tremor Felt in Santa Monica
A mild offshore earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale awakened residents in Santa Monica and Malibu early today, but no damage was reported. Centered six miles west of Santa Monica in the Catalina Channel, the quake struck at 3:51 a.m. and lasted about 10 seconds, Sang Choi, a seismologist at California Institute of Technology, said. About 30 residents in the northern section of Santa Monica called police about the tremors.
