Sun Valley Mother Gets 2 Years for Abuse

A Sun Valley woman who allegedly bit her 3-year-old daughter and then held the child over a burning stove was sentenced Monday to two years in state prison.
Rosa Lopez, 24, was arrested last August after her daughter was admitted to Serra Memorial Health Center in Sun Valley. The girl had third-degree burns on her back and chest, a black eye, hemorrhages on her head and multiple puncture wounds on her ears, according to a police report.
In a plea-bargain with the district attorney’s office, Lopez, who was originally charged with six counts of child endangering, pleaded guilty to one count last month.
Police said that, when Lopez was asked by hospital personnel about the child’s condition, she said the burns occurred when a liquid accidentally spilled on the girl.
Lopez, a dough maker at a Sun Valley tortilla factory, was unable to post bond and had remained in County Jail since her arrest, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Simon Hiller.
She faced a maximum term of six years in prison, said Hiller.
The child is now under the care of foster parents.
