Responding to complaints from business interests and others, U.S. Customs officials reopened the international border crossing at Tecate for an hour Tuesday--and announced that beginning today it will be open eight hours daily until further notice. The station was one of nine closed last week when authorities were tipped that drug smugglers planned to kidnap a Border Patrol officer. Customs spokesman Jerome Hollander said the Tecate crossing was reopened to allow departure of people stranded by the shutdown. He said the crossing point at Andrade, Ariz., near Yuma, was also opened for an hour Tuesday and would be open eight hours daily hereafter.
