Lawndale

The city is reviving nostalgic trolley cars in the form of shuttle buses that look like old-fashioned streetcars and come complete with cassettes playing vintage music. The City Council has approved a one-year, $175,000 contract with Pacific Busing Inc. to operate two buses that will loop each half of the city, with Hawthorne Boulevard as the dividing line. The service, expected to begin within 90 days, will be free. Specific routing and the location of stops are being worked out by the city and the bus company, which now operates trolley-like shuttle buses in the Fairfax area of Los Angeles and in Glendale. The Lawndale system will be funded from the city’s share of a county transit tax.
