The city has asked the Los Angeles Unified School District to set up a job-training center in a building at Otis Avenue and Elizabeth Street, said City Manager Jerry Caton.
The district is “very pleased” with the city’s offer and will move soon to seal the agreement, said Gabriel Cortina, assistant superintendent of adult and vocational education.
“We’re starting off with a very promising joint venture,” Cortina said.
The city bought the site in 1983 for $1.1 million, developed a park and a service yard for city trucks there and was left with a large warehouse partially filled with offices, Caton said. Under the proposal, the district would staff and operate the building as a skills center, working with the city “to funnel people who are unskilled or jobless” into the program, Cortina said.
The district’s six skills centers in East Los Angeles, Watts, Pacoima, Central Los Angeles, Venice and the west San Fernando Valley have placed 80% of their students in jobs upon completion of courses, Cortina said.
