Spring Training Roundup : Ramirez Arrives in Camp --It Was a Costly Delay

Four days after the reporting deadline, Atlanta Braves shortstop Rafael Ramirez arrived at the team’s West Palm Beach, Fla., training camp, saying he was detained in the Dominican Republic by credit card problems.

“I lost my credit cards, and somebody was charging stuff on them,” Ramirez said after arriving in Florida. “That cost me some money.

“It made me mad, ticked off, because everything took so long, but the really important thing is that I’m here now.”

Braves’ officials said Wednesday that Ramirez would be fined $1,000 for failing to show by the official deadline, which was Friday.

Notes Center fielder Mookie Wilson of the New York Mets said at St. Petersburg, Fla., that he will sit out the first week of the exhibition schedule while he rests his tender right shoulder. Wilson, a four-year veteran who batted .276 with 46 stolen bases in 1984, missed an occasional game last season because of a sore right shoulder he suffered in spring training. He was advised to rest all winter and only recently began strength and flexibility exercises. . . . Philadelphia Phillies rookie pitcher Rich Surhoff suffered a fractured right wrist when he was hit by a line drive in batting practice at Clearwater, Fla. Surhoff was hit by a line drive off the bat of Rick Schu. A Phillies spokesman said the right-hander was throwing from behind a pitching screen but failed to lower his arm in time to avoid being hit. Surhoff is expected to be sidelined 10 days but will be re-examined Saturday by the team physician. . . .

Montreal reliever Gary Lucas has been sidelined indefinitely with muscle strains in his lower back. The left-hander worked only once after Sept. 12 last year because of a sciatic nerve problem in his lower back, and he described his current problem as exactly the same. Lucas struck out two of the three men he faced in a perfect inning during intrasquad action Wednesday at West Palm Beach, Fla. However, after firing a fastball past Razor Shines for the final out Lucas threw his glove to the ground in disgust. Pitching coach Larry Bearnarth rushed to the mound and called the game off when Lucas complained of a twinge in his back. Lucas was to have pitched the final inning for both sides. . . . Trying to make a comeback from a sickness-plagued 4-12 record of last season, Britt Burns pitched three innings of one-run ball to help the Chicago White Sox defeat Florida Southern College, 7-4, in a warmup for the Grapefruit League season at Sarasota, Fla.
