Couple Labor Under False Assumption; Sextuplets Due

The couple waited the recommended 10 weeks for his vasectomy to take effect. “Dick waited his time,” Kim Perham, 27, said, “but I guess it took him a little longer.” She is pregnant with sextuplets. They already have twin sons and the expected arrivals will bring the Perham brood to eight--all under the age of 3. Ultrasound tests predict an addition of four girls and two boys. “He’s always wanted a girl,” Kim said of Dick Perham, 33, a diesel mechanic at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Me. “Now he’s got girls.” She said they were overwhelmed when informed in December of her pregnancy. “We were astounded,” she said. “We couldn’t believe this was happening.” After her doctor broke the initial news, he added his hunch that it would again be twins. Using ultrasound testing, the doctor revised his projection, saying that he heard four heartbeats. “After he told us we had four, we weren’t shocked about having six,” she said. Kim Perham is expected to deliver via a Caesarean section on July 28.

--The Missouri county wanted its overdue taxes--$7,306.02 in all--so it sent Sheriff’s Deputy F. W. Johnson around to a Kansas City address to serve a summons on Siegfried St. Bernard. The dog died in 1978. William Hagel, a retired auctioneer, has lived since 1956 at the address listed for one Siegfried St. Bernard. There was no explanation of how his dog Siegfried’s name got on the tax rolls. “I’ve had St. Bernard dogs since I was 14 years old,” Hagel said. “I still have six, but they sued Siegfried. He was registered as Siegfried Hunk with the American Kennel Club.”

--”I want my car to die for a needy cause,” said nurse Phyllis Weldon, who describes her 1980 Pontiac Sunbird as a “voodoo beast.” The two-door hatchback has been in 14 wrecks, including one just moments after Weldon drove it off the lot in 1980. She claims she was not responsible for any of the accidents, and state records indicate she is right. The Miami Fire Department refused to blow the car up for her, so Weldon has turned it over to Joe Conti, a bartender at Friday’s Downtown Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale. For $2 a whack, people can pound the car to pieces with a sledgehammer. The proceeds will go to Kids in Distress, a shelter for battered children. The first swing has been reserved for Weldon.
