The Dodgers will play the Samsung Lions, pride of the Korean Professional Baseball League, today at Holman Stadium. National honor is not at stake--this is, after all, merely the Dodgers’ exhibition opener--though you wouldn’t know it by looking at the VIP box here, or what will pass for one.

The commissioner of baseball, Peter Ueberroth, will be here. The man who used to be commissioner, Bowie Kuhn, also will be here. Not to be outdone, the South Koreans sent their commissioner, Gen. Jyong Chul Suh.

Will the South Koreans be up for this game, to be broadcast in Los Angeles by KABC radio (10:30 a.m.). “They’d better be,” Dodger Manager Tom Lasorda said, “because this is their only shot.”

Lasorda plans to play his first team, the one that at this point will open the season at Houston on April 9. Greg Brock will be at first, Steve Sax at second, Dave Anderson at short and Pedro Guerrero at third. Al Oliver will be in left, Ken Landreaux in center and Mike Marshall in right. Mike Scioscia will be behind the plate.

Jerry Reuss is scheduled to pitch at least the first two innings, followed by Bobby Castillo and four nonroster pitchers: Vance Lovelace, Rob Rowen, Salvino Galvez and Greg Mayberry.

The Lions, training here for two weeks by invitation of Dodger owner Peter O’Malley, will counter with their first team, too--which by most guesses places them on a double-A level.

Stars of the team include catcher Lee Man Soo, nicknamed the Hulk, who hit .340 with 23 homers last season, and outfielder Chang Hyo Cho, a .324 hitter. Kim Si Jin, a left-hander who won 19 games, will start for the South Koreans.

Dodger Notes

Pitcher Orel Hershiser missed a second day of workouts with a stomach virus. “He’s to the soup-and-cracker stage,” said Hershiser’s father, Orel III. . . . Hoyt Wilhelm, recently voted to the Hall of Fame, was a visitor here. . . . Tom Lasorda, to catcher Mike Scioscia: “Before he even tasted linguine, he tasted the fruits of victory.” Scioscia: “I should have stuck with the fruit.” . . . Sunday, the Dodgers open their regular exhibtion schedule against the Cincinnati Reds (Channel 11, 10:30 a.m.). Fernando Valenzuela and Tom Brennan are scheduled to work three innings each. Also slated for work are Tom Niedenfuer, Ken Howell and Carlos Diaz.
