Spencer Completes His Sweep

Freddie Spencer won the 44th annual Daytona 200 Motorcycle Classic to complete a sweep of the three featured Motorcyle Week races at Daytona Beach, Fla.

Spencer, 23, of Shreveport, La., averaged 102.989 m.p.h. on his Honda 750 Interceptor and finished the race in 1:58:13. The victory was worth $17,740.

Spencer also won the Camel Pro Series Formula One National and Formula Two races earlier in the weekend.

In Sunday’s race, Spencer fell behind briefly during the fourth lap when engine problems forced him into the pits and again later when he stopped to refuel and change a tire.

But on the 29th lap, Spencer passed Wes Cooley of Ramona, Calif., who took second place, 1.23 seconds behind.

Jeff Haney of Carmel, Calif., finished third and Ron Haslam of Nottingham, England, was fourth. Cooley, Haney and Haslam all rode Hondas. Canadian Rueben McMurter rode a Yamaha to finish fifth.

The 11-year-old Utah Jazz NBA franchise will go on sale April 16 unless the team sells 30 limited partnerships at $100,000 each, club President David Checketts said.

“The team is on sale to Salt Lake City today,” he said. “On April 16, it will be on sale to the highest bidder.”

Checketts said if Triad America, a company owned by the rich Khashoggi family of Saudi Arabia, had not become a coguarantor on a $5 million bank loan last week, the club may already have been up for sale.

“The net effect is that, unless Triad had come in and become a comaker on the loan, then the bank, I think, would have asked us to sell the team now,” he said.

Austria’s Andi Felder took a one-point lead in the overall World Ski Jump Cup despite finishing fourth behind Matti Nykannen of Finland, who made the longest jumps in both rounds at Oslo, Norway.

Nykannen jumped 352 feet in the first round and 341 feet in the second.

Felder raised his point total to 195, with Nykannen at 194. There is one competition left.

A total of 31 of the LPGA’s 34 leading money winners of 1984 have entered the $250,000 GNA Tournament, scheduled for March 20-24 at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. Included are five of the tour winners this year--Hollis Stacy, JoAnne Carner, Patty Sheehan, Amy Alcott and Betsy King.

Honduras stayed alive in the World Cup soccer qualifying tournament with a 2-1 victory over El Salvador at San Salvador, marking the first time since 1935 it has defeated a Salvadoran team on its home ground.

Honduras took a 1-0 halftime lead on a goal by James Bailey which came on a headshot 1:19 into the game at Cuscatlan Stadium, Central America’s largest, before 55,000 fans.

Honduras had to either win or tie the game to stay in the competition for the World Cup. A victory by El Salvador would have guaranteed it a place in the three-way finals to determine a regional representative in the World Cup in Mexico next year.
