Darryl Strawberry signed a multiyear contract with the New York Mets in a deal in which the outfielder has the potential of earning nearly $8 million over the next six years, according to a club official.
Al Harazin, the Mets’ vice president who negotiated the contract, said that because one third of the money will be deferred Strawberry will upon retirement receive $500,000 annually for the rest of his life. Strawberry had his 23rd birthday Tuesday.
