The government last month opened preliminary investigations into possible brake and engine defects in millions of General Motors Corp. vehicles, government officials confirmed. Nine million 1978-1984 model A-, G-, and F-cars, including the Oldsmobile Cutlass, allegedly experience corrosion of rear brake backing plates, which can lead to loss of rear brakes. Another 2 million 1982-1985 model J-cars are under government study for alleged engine surges that could cause uncontrolled acceleration.
