Israel Quizzed on New Envoy

TEL AVIV —
The United States has asked Israel whether the appointment of veteran diplomat Thomas Pickering as its ambassador to Israel would be acceptable, Maariv newspaper reported today.
Pickering, 54, currently U.S. ambassador to El Salvador, is Secretary of State George P. Shultz’s first choice to replace outgoing Ambassador Samuel Lewis, due to leave Israel in May.
