A senior Israeli official on Thursday praised Washington’s refusal to play a major role in the Middle East peace process now, saying this forces moderate Arab states to deal directly with Israel.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak ended a visit to the United States on Wednesday, failing to persuade the Reagan Administration to launch a new high-profile peace initiative.

The Israeli official, briefing reporters on condition he not be named, said Washington’s insistence on direct negotiations with Israel and refusal to talk to the Palestine Liberation Organization were important and constructive.
