$7.5-Million Doheny Eye Hospital to Be Dedicated
The $7.5-million, 35-bed Estelle Doheny Eye Hospital will be dedicated Monday at 1537 Norfolk St. near the Doheny Eye Foundation on the USC Health Sciences Campus.
The two-story, 43,800-square-foot building will feature an eye trauma center open around the clock, seven days a week, four operating rooms, 72 parking spaces and complete hospital facilities, according to Hans Mumper of Langdon Wilson Mumper Architects, Los Angeles, the architects.
Funding for the hospital, which will also function as a teaching facility for the USC ophthalmology department, was raised through the Estelle Doheny Eye foundation, established in 1947 to promote sight preservation. A contribution of $250,000 came from the Southern California Building Funds, an agency that has distributed more than $21 million for the building programs of hospitals since 1946.
“The facility will enable us to better coordinate the teaching, research and clinic activities of the Doheny organization for the maximum benefit to the patient and attending physician,” said Paul J. Hensler, administrator of the hospital.
