Trustees for the Centinela Valley Union High School District unanimously agreed during a special session Tuesday to sell the closed Lennox High School site at the appraisal price of $8.2 million to the Lennox Elementary School District for use as a middle school.
The site will require an additional $2 million for rehabilitation and conversion to middle school use, including $789,000 for sound-proofing the classroom from jet noise, according to elementary district Supt. Ken Moffett. Approximately $10 million will be requested this month from the state Allocation Board for the purchase, he said.
If funding is granted, Moffett estimated that the conversion will be completed for the 1986 academic year, when approximately 1,300 to 1,440 students from sixth through eighth grades would be attending the new school.
“It’s a good feeling to know the site is for a school,” said Trustee Ruth Morales before the vote.
The campus was closed last summer after a court ruled that the school’s high minority attendance amounted to segregation. Students from the closed school are now attending either Leuzinger or Hawthorne high schools.
High school Supt. McKinley Nash said the income from the school sale will probably be used for building repairs, although no specific project has been named.
