Explosion Hurls Roof Off Burbank Garage

Share

Agarage in Burbank filled with gas from a makeshift stove connection and exploded Wednesday, flattening the building and hurling its roof onto a neighboring house.

There were no injuries, fire officials said.

Battalion Fire Chief Doug Parris estimated damage at $14,000 to the garage and adjacent house at 520 Main St.

“The garage roof hit a neighbor’s house and knocked a corner off,” Parris said. Windows were blown out of several nearby houses, he said.

Parris said there was evidence that the garage had been converted into a living unit without a required city permit. The city Building Department is investigating, he said.

Battalion Chief Ken Whittekiend said the explosion shattered windows in houses up to 10 lots away and knocked down power lines, causing telephone and power outages to residents of the block and the street behind it.

Fire officials said the garage had filled with gas from a pipe connected to the stove.
