Wife of Coach Wooden Dies

Nellie Wooden, the wife of legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, died today at St. Vincents Medical Center after a long illness. She was 73.

Wooden, 74, was at his wife’s bedside when she died, said UCLA Sports Department spokesman Rich Bertolucci. The Woodens were married in 1932 after meeting at a carnival in Martinsville, Ind., when he was a high school freshman. Bertolucci said funeral services will be private and for family members only.
