Spring Training / Highlights : Expos’ Gullickson Is Sharp in 3-0 Victory Over Orioles

Bill Gullickson, who pitched the first five innings, combined with Randy St. Claire and Dan Schatzeder on a five-hitter as the Montreal Expos defeated the Baltimore Orioles, 3-0, Wednesday at West Palm Beach, Fla.

Gullickson, who has allowed just two runs in 12 innings this spring, struck out the side in the first inning and allowed the Orioles only three hits.

Gullickson drove in a run in the second inning with a bases-loaded ground-out, and Miguel Dilone followed with a two-run double.

Pinch-hitter Ron Johnson had a bases-loaded double, and catcher Bob Melvin added a two-run single during a six-run eighth inning that lifted the Detroit Tigers to an 11-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Bradenton, Fla.

Pascual Perez held the Kansas City Royals to two hits in five innings, and Paul Zuvella hit a two-run single to power the Atlanta Braves to a 3-1 victory at Fort Myers, Fla.

Minnesota’s Tom Brunansky hit his fourth spring-training homer in a 6-3 victory over Houston at Orlando, Fla. The homer came off Nolan Ryan, who allowed six hits in a seven-inning stint . . . Philadelphia’s Jeff Stone got two hits to boost his spring batting average to .529 in a 6-5 victory over the New York Mets at Clearwater, Fla. Shane Rawley pitched five strong innings for Philadelphia, facing the minimum 15 batters as he gave up two hits but was aided by two double plays . . . Kansas City’s Larry Gura pitched four shutout innings, running his spring total to 10 scoreless innings . . . Bart Johnson, 35-year-old former scout for the White Sox who is attempting a comeback, allowed a run and a hit in two innings of work.
