Irving Asher; Longtime Film Studios Executive
Irving Asher, a motion picture producer and executive whose career dated to 1919, died Sunday at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Indio after what hospital spokeswoman Susie Dye said was a long illness.
Asher, who was 81, lived in Rancho Mirage near Palm Springs. He had been managing director for Warner Bros. from 1931 to 1938, then moved to England where he was in charge of Warners’ productions there.
He later worked for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Paramount and with Alexander Korda.
Asher’s credits included such films as “Billy the Kid” with Robert Taylor (1941); “Blossoms in the Dust” with Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon (1941); “The Four Feathers” with John Clements and Ralph Richardson (1939) and “The Turning Point” with William Holden (1952).
Asher is survived by his wife, silent screen star Laura La Plante; daughter Jill Asher Murray of San Francisco; son Tony Asher of Encino, and a grandson, Evan.
