Black Mayors Increase 10% in 1984 Elections

WASHINGTON — Aided by Jesse Jackson’s presidential bid and increased voter registration, the number of black mayors rose by more than 10%, to 286, in last year’s elections, a researcher said Friday.
The addition of 31 mayors marked the largest one-year increase on record, said Thomas Cavanagh, senior research associate with the Joint Center for Political Studies.
