7 Charged With Sales of Pot in San Fernando

Charges were filed Monday against seven San Fernando men as a result of a weekend drug sweep by the San Fernando police to discourage street-corner sales of marijuana.

Deputy Dist. Atty. John Spillane said the men were arrested during an undercover operation Saturday afternoon at the corner of Hewitt and Kalisher streets. Reserve police officers posing as drug buyers drove up to the corner and bought $10 bags of marijuana from the seven suspects before uniformed officers made the arrests, he said.

Spillane said the operation is the first street-corner sweep in that area to use undercover officers posing as buyers. Previous arrests for drug sales had been made when police surveillance teams observed the sales. Prosecutors would then persuade buyers to testify against the suspected sellers, he said.
