NHL Roundup : Black Hawks Stop Flyers’ Win Streak

Philadelphia Coach Mike Keenan saw his Flyers’ consecutive-game win streak stopped at 11 Wednesday night by a Chicago Black Hawk squad whose play he called inspirational.

Chicago’s Steve Ludzik jammed in a rebound at 7:34 of the final period, and the Hawks added two insurance goals 28 seconds apart to bolster backup goalie Warren Skorodenski in a 5-2 victory at Chicago.

“As luck would have it, Ludzik was in the right place at the right time,” Keenan said. “But from that point on, the Hawks played like this was the seventh game of the Stanley Cup.”

Ludzik, playing on the Hawks’ fourth line, scored the game-winner after Rick Paterson’s 10-foot wrist shot was kicked out by Flyers’ goaltender Pelle Lindbergh. It came less than a minute after Philadelphia’s Brian Propp had tied the game, 2-2.

Propp’s score, his 41st of the season and second of the game, sent Chicago goalkeeper Murray Bannerman slumping to the ice with a cramped leg muscle. Skorodenski finished the game in the nets for Chicago.

The Hawks’ victory, their 36th against 34 losses and 5 ties, moved them within three points of Norris Division-leading St. Louis. Philadelphia, losing for only the fourth time in the last 23 contests, lost a chance to wrap up the Patrick Division title.

Buffalo 3, New York Rangers 2--Phil Housley scored two goals, including a third-period tie-breaker, to lead the Sabres to a victory at Buffalo that further tightened the standings in the Adams Division.

The win moved the Sabres within a point of the Montreal Canadiens and the Quebec Nordiques.

Hartford 3, Washington 1--Sylvain Turgeon and rookie Kevin Dineen gave Hartford a two-goal lead, and goalie Mike Liut made 31 saves as the Whalers posted their sixth straight victory, a club record, at Landover, Md.

Toronto 4, St. Louis 2--A power-play goal by John Anderson with 6:40 remaining and Bill Derlago’s short-handed goal into an empty net with 1:02 left paced the Maple Leafs, the last-place team in the Norris Division, to a victory over the Norris leader.

Pittsburgh 4, New Jersey 3--In a battle of teams going the wrong way, Pittsburgh center Mitch Lamoureux scored a pair of goals as the Penguins broke a five-game losing streak. The loss extended the Devils’ losing streak to eight games.

Winnipeg 5, Vancouver 3--Dale Hawerchuk scored a goal and added two assists at Vancouver to lead the Jets to a club-record ninth consecutive win.
