Bream’s Three-Run Homer Helps Dodgers Defeat Blue Jays, 10-6

Sid Bream’s three-run home run was the big blow in a seven-run sixth inning Saturday as the Dodgers rallied for a 10-6 exhibition victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Toronto starter Doyle Alexander allowed only four hits and three runs in the first 5 innings before giving up five consecutive hits and seven runs in the sixth.

After striking out Al Oliver and Pedro Guerrero to start the sixth, Alexander yielded a single to Mike Scioscia, a single to Mike Marshall, a run-scoring single to Greg Brock and Bream’s three-run homer. Ken Landreaux later added a run-scoring single, and second baseman Damaso Garcia then fumbled a grounder by Oliver that allowed two more runs to score.

The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the first when Steve Sax walked, stole second and scored on Oliver’s single.

Toronto tied the score in the third as Garcia singled off winning pitcher Jerry Reuss and scored when Reuss threw wildly past first base after fielding Lloyd Moseby’s tapper to the mound.

The Dodgers scored twice in the fourth for a 3-1 lead. Guerrero tripled and scored on a wild pitch by Alexander. Scioscia then doubled with two out, went to third on an error by Moseby and scored on a single by Brock.

The Blue Jays tied it in their half of the fourth and went ahead, 6-3, with three in the fifth. Consecutive hits by Garcia, Moseby and George Bell produced the first run, and designated hitter Jeff Burroughs’ added a two-run single.

The Dodgers, who have the best record in the National League this spring, are 13-7. The Blue Jays, atop the American League, have a 14-7 record despite losing their third straight.
