Actor Paul Newman announced a pledge of $1.2 million as “seed money” to help create an anti-drug education center at the USC School of Pharmacy. At a press conference on the USC campus, Newman said the money would be channeled to the school through the Scott Newman Foundation--a nonprofit organization created by Newman and his family after his 28-year-old son died from what police termed an accidental overdose of alcohol and Valium in 1978. Newman’s daughter, Susan, has worked full-time since January in development of the Scott Newman Center for Drug Abuse Prevention and Health Communication Research at USC. She said the new center will emphasize television, radio and film productions aimed at helping children develop the ability to reject drugs.
