Tennis Roundup : Sundstrom Beats Vilas at Monte Carlo; Arias Is Upset

Defending champion Henrik Sundstrom of Sweden defeated Guillermo Vilas of Argentina, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, Wednesday in a three-hour quarterfinal match at the $325,000 Monte Carlo Open.

Meanwhile, West Germany’s Michael Westphal upset American Jimmy Arias, 7-6, 6-4. Westphal is ranked 77th in the world.

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia fought off a strong challenge by American Lawson Duncan to win, 6-4, 6-4; Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia had less difficulty in eliminating Florin Segarceanu of Romania, 6-4, 6-2.; Aaron Krickstein, the sole American remaining in contention, disposed of Australian John Frawley, 6-3, 6-2, and Paraguayan veteran Victor Pecci outlasted Spain’s Roberto Arguello, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.

At Chicago, John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors breezed to victories in the $315,000 Volvo Grand Prix tournament. McEnroe routed Peter Doohan, 6-0, 6-0, and Connors defeated Jay Lapidus, 6-2, 6-3.

In an earlier match, Andres Gomez of Ecuador, seeded third despite a five-month layoff, struggled to a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 second-round victory over John Fitzgerald of Australia.

Gomez, ranked fifth in the world, was forced to go to a tiebreaker in the second set. In the third set, with the games tied at 3-3, Gomez broke Fitzgerald’s service in the seventh game, scoring repeatedly with passing shots. In the 10th and final game, Gomez collected his fifth ace of the day.

Tim Mayotte eliminated John Sadri, 7-6, 7-5; Scott Davis defeated Robert Green, 6-3, 6-4, and Brad Gilbert beat Mike Bauer, 6-4, 6-1.
