Let’s set the record and letter-writer E. Espinosa straight (Calendar Letters, March 31):
The millions of dollars produced by the song “We Are the World” for African and U.S. hunger relief is far greater than 10% of the income of all the stars involved in this recording.
Moreover, several of the stars are underwriting the overhead of USA for Africa so that every dollar raised will go directly for famine relief.
Most important, the work of USA for Africa is not just about raising money. It is about raising consciousness about hunger throughout the world and making the solution to this problem the No. 1 priority among people.
No amount of financial contribution could possibly do for this effort what 45 superstar voices are accomplishing by having come together to sing this marvelous and meaningful song.
