Newport Beach : Block-Grant Projects on City Council Agenda

Share

Distribution of federal Community Development Block Grant funds will be considered by the City Council Monday night. Discussion was carried over from the council’s last meeting, after public hearings on other agenda items drove the session into overtime.

Under the federal Housing and Urban Development Act, the funds are made available to cities for the benefit of low-income and moderate-income residents, and for fighting urban blight. During fiscal 1984-1985 and 1985-1986, some $1.11 million will be available to the city for approved projects.

Five organizations--Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter, the Friends of OASIS senior citizens center, Wale Development Corp., Orange County Community Housing Corp. and the Orange County Fair Housing Council--have requested nearly $1.4 million from the grants.

Among proposals to come before the council Monday will be construction of a rental housing for low- and moderate-income families, and expansion of the OASIS center to accommodate health, legal and financial services.
