Phillips Names Silas Chairman, Chief Executive

Share

Phillips Petroleum promoted President C. J. Silas to the posts of chairman and chief executive Tuesday, succeeding William C. Douce, 65, who is retiring May 1, after 43 years with the company.

Named to succeed Silas as president and chief operating officer is Glenn A. Cox, who is currently executive vice president of the $15-billion Oklahoma oil company. Silas, 52, joined the company in 1953. He was named executive vice president in 1980 and became president in April, 1982. Cox, 55, has served in his current post since 1980 and was responsible for corporate finance.

A company spokeswoman said Silas’ promotion is part of a regular management transition after Douce reached Phillips’ mandatory retirement age last December.

Phillips is in the midst of a corporate restructuring following a hostile takeover attempt earlier this year by Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens. Last month, Phillips announced a swap of stock for debt securities that should make it a less palatable company to future corporate raiders.
