Westminster Rallies Past Edison in the Sunset, 6-4

Westminster High School, trailing Edison by four going into the fourth inning, scored six runs during the next three innings to upset the Chargers, 6-4, in a Sunset League game played on the Lions’ field at Westminster.

Winning pitcher Jack Bailey highlighted a three-run fourth inning with a two-run double, and Steve Gullery tied the game with a solo home run in the fifth. The Lions went ahead with two runs in the sixth as John Tazza scored on a passed ball and Al Rodriquez, who had three hits, scored on Mike Skjonsby’s suicide squeeze.

Westminster is 2-3-1 in league and 5-7-1 overall. Dave Solarzano went 3 for 4 with 2 triples and Jeff Kent had two hits and two RBIs for Edison, 4-2, 14-6.

In other Sunset League action:

Ocean View 2, Fountain Valley 1 (10 innings)--Phil Chess’ two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Blane DeBrouwer with the winning run as the Seahawks defeated the Barons at Ocean View. The Seahawks are 2-4 in league and 10-6 overall, Fountain Valley is 2-3-1, 11-5-1.

Huntington Beach 6, Marina 5 (nine innings)--Rick Eusey’s RBI single in the top of the ninth inning scored Carey Port with the go-ahead run, and the Oilers held on to defeat the Vikings. Huntington Beach (9-5 overall) moves into a first-place tie with Edison at 4-2. Marina is 3-3, 6-7.

El Toro 9, Mission Viejo 6--The Chargers moved into a first-place tie with the victory over the Diablos at Mission Viejo. Frank Appice and Doug Barron each had four hits for El Toro (3-1 in league, 10-8 overall), and Appice added a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Scott Shockey added two hits and an RBI for the Chargers. Richard Faulks pitched five innings of relief to earn the victory. The Diablos (3-1, 11-4) were led by Bob Brucatto, who had two hits and two RBIs.

Laguna Hills 10, Capistrano Valley 3--Wayne Helm went all the way on a three-hitter and struck out nine to lead the Hawks past the Cougars at Laguna Hills. He received offensive support from Steve Fesperman, who went 4 for 4 with two home runs (a three-run HR in the second inning and a two-run hit in the sixth) and six RBIs.

Dave Shetland added three hits and an RBI, and Dave Stevens had two hits for the Hawks, who improve to 3-1 in league and 11-6 overall. Marcel Durand went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Cougars, 1-4, 9-10.

Dana Hills 12, San Clemente 6--Dave Kirkpatrick hit two solo home runs to pace the Dolphins past the Tritons at San Clemente. Scott Hefner added two doubles and two RBIs, and Bill Lasher had a double, single and three RBIs for Dana Hill (3-2). San Clemente is 0-4.

Los Amigos 6, La Quinta 3--Ralph Ramirez pitched a complete-game, three-hitter to lead the Lobos to an upset over the second-ranked Aztecs at La Quinta. Los Amigos broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, as Matt Phelps hit an RBI triple and scored on a wild pitch.

Phelps went 3 for 4 with two triples, two RBIs and three runs scored on the day, and Ramirez knocked in two runs with a single and a ground out. Mike Clodfelter hit a solo home run in the second for Los Amigos (2-4 in league, 6-8 overall).

La Quinta (5-1 and 12-2) played without its clean-up hitter and RBI leader, Danny Spradlin, who fractured his hand last week and may miss the remainder of the season. John Brewer, the Aztecs’ No. 5 hitter, also sat out with an injury. Steve Hunt, who pitched six innings, took the loss and dropped to 6-1.

Santiago 5, Rancho Alamitos 4--The Cavaliers scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning for the come-from-behind victory at Rancho Alamitos. Ben Tauanuu knocked in the first run with a double and then stole home for the second run. Joe Marquez scored the winning run on a walk to David Petrutis.

Marquez was the starting pitcher, but he hit three batters and walked four in 1 innings before giving way to Jason Alberti, who allowed just one hit over the last 5 innings and got the win. Rick Burns added a two-run homer in the fourth inning for Santiago (3-3 in league, 6-7 overall).

Bolsa Grande 6, Garden Grove 3--The Matadors scored four runs in the fourth inning on two suicide squeeze bunts to improve their league record to 4-2 and 6-9 overall with a win at Bolsa Grande. Garden Grove is 3-2, 5-7.

Newport Harbor 16, Laguna Beach 5--The Sailors scored 10 runs in the fourth inning in their rout over the Artists in Newport Beach.

Newport Harbor (3-2, 7-8) sent 14 batters to the plate and got seven hits in the fourth. Catcher Wes Torell, who went 2 for 4, capped the outburst with a two-run homer.

Manny Adams went 4 for 5 and had four RBIs, Joey James was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Todd Lawrence went 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Freshman second baseman Tony Wren, making his first varsity start, was 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Jon Mahoney (2-3) pitched the first five innings to get the victory.

University 9, Woodbridge 2--Mark Stride (4-0) struck out 13 in his complete-game victory over the Warriors at Woodbridge.

The Trojans (4-1, 6-5) broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning. Center fielder Mark Favorite went 3 for 4 with a triple and four RBIs. Gene Artiano, Steve Conner and Dave Huegy each went 2 for 3. Woodbridge is 2-3, 6-7.

Estancia 4, Saddleback 2--Eagle shortstop Mike Lujan was 3 for 3 and homered to lead off the third inning, as Estancia defeated the Roadrunners. Scott Clements went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI, and Eric Van Dorn had a double, scored a run and knocked in another.

Jim Foley improved his record to 6-1 by pitching a six-hitter with 11 strikeouts. The Eagles are 4-1 in league, 10-6 overall. Saddleback is 2-3, 3-11.

La Habra 7, Troy 6--The Highlanders scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the first on Michael Jackson’s sacrifice fly and the second on Jamie Martinez’s single, to defeat the Warriors at La Habra. Jackson had two hits and three RBIs for La Habra (2-4 in league).

Tony Godfrey went 4 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI for Troy (4-2).

Sunny Hills 14, Buena Park 5--Mike Wilson allowed 7 hits and struck out 11 in a complete-game performance for the league-leading Lancers (6-0, 12-3).

Rod Turner went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and two RBIs, and David Wackerman added two hits, one of them a solo home run in the fourth inning. Buena Park is 2-4 in league.

Sonora 8, Fullerton 5--Rob Stuart broke a 4-4 tie with a grand slam in the sixth inning to lead the Raiders to the win at Fullerton. Ron Lesperance added a solo home run in the second inning and an RBI single in the fifth, and Brian Miller hit a solo homer in the third for Sonora, which improves to 3-3 in league and 8-7 overall.

David Sepulveda went 2 for 3 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs for the Indians (1-5, 5-9).

Valencia 6, Anaheim 5--Jim Campanis’ RBI single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Troy Barnhart with the winning run, as the Tigers beat the Colonists at Valencia. Shane Smith, who relieved Jeff Martinez in the fifth inning, was the winning pitcher.

Valencia’s Andy Ruscitto, Orange County’s home run leader, hit a two-run HR in the third inning, hi ninth of the season. The Tigers are 3-3 in league and 8-5 overall.

Western 11, Brea-Olinda 2--John Ortiz went 4 for 4 with five RBIs, three of them coming on a home run, to lead the Pioneers to the win at Anaheim’s Glover Stadium. Paul Boucher added three hits for Western, 4-2 in league. The Wildcats are 3-3.

Magnolia 4, Savanna 3--The Sentinels scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out the victory in Brookhurst Park at Anaheim.
