Los Alamitos : Council Picks Selvaggi for Mayor’s Position

The City Council has chosen as mayor Anthony R. Selvaggi, a former vice mayor and a vocal opponent of general aviation uses of Los Alamitos Air Station. Kenneth Zommer has taken over the duties of vice mayor.

The change followed an informal council policy, adopted last year, that city officials should serve one-year terms.

The California Municipal Code requires reorganization only after biennial municipal elections. Los Alamitos’ next election is scheduled for next April, although the council has been looking into consolidating the municipal election with the general election in November, as many Orange County cities have done.

Selvaggi, 60, originally from Pennsylvania, has lived in Los Alamitos since 1963. He is married and has two grown children. Before his election to the council in 1982, he served on the Planning Commission for nine years and the Personnel Appeals Commission for three years. The new mayor said he favors “simplified zoning” and “reasonable growth and development.”

A graduate of the UCLA School of Business and the Air Force Institute of Technology, Selvaggi is retired from a career in Air Force weapons-systems procurement.
