O. J. Simpson to Start Benefit 10-K Run

O. J. Simpson will shoot the starting gun for the Laguna Beach Education Foundation’s fourth annual 10-kilometer run at 8 a.m. April 28. Simpson, a sports commentator and entertainer, is a resident of Laguna Beach and retired professional football player. The runners will wend their way through the coastal and inland streets of Laguna Beach.

Two pilots stationed at the Marine Corps helicopter base in Tustin have received the Navy Commendation Medal for heroism. Major Kelly O. Hanlon of El Toro and Captain Joseph M. Lemma of Tustin, both from the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron, were commended for their rescue of an injured Marine while training at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center at Pickel Meadows near Bridgeport, Calif., in February.

Garden Grove Elks Lodge No. 1952 has presented Scout-of-the-Year and Student-of-the-Month awards to four local teen-agers. David Bailey, a star scout from Troop 281, and Scott Hill, of Sea Explorer Ship 1952, “Westwind,” received awards for their dedication to scouting. Anh B. Do and Thanara Tran both received the student awards along with $50 for their outstanding scholastic achievements.

Charlotte Mousel, secretary of the California Republican Party, will be the guest speaker at the Yorba Linda Republican Women Federated meeting on Wednesday. Mousel will discuss the national group and her recent trip to Washington, D.C. Elena Silva, a fourth-grader at Clinton Elementary School in Garden Grove, captured second prize in the Orange County competition of the National Children’s Dental Health Month Poster Contest.

Robert W. Bein was elected president of the California Council of Civil Engineers and Land Surveyors. Bein also received Engineer of the Year Award from the Orange County Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Bein is the president and chief executive officer of Robert Bein, William Frost & Associates of Newport Beach.
