In its annual reorganization, the Signal Hill City Council unanimously voted to appoint 64-year-old Louis Dare mayor and 48-year-old Jessie Blacksmith mayor pro tem at its Tuesday night meeting.

Dare, who owns a local plastic injection molding business, is in the fourth year of his first term as councilman and had served as mayor pro tem. The conservative voice on the council, Dare won election in 1982 at the beginning of the city’s reform push. Blacksmith, a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District, just finished her first year on the council.

The Long Beach Unified School District Board of Education also reorganized at its Monday afternoon meeting. Arlene Solomon, who is in her sixth year as a trustee, was the board’s choice as president. Solomon, who is 59, replaces Harriet Williams. Dr. John Kashiwabara, 63, was chosen as vice president, replacing Solomon.
