A burglary suspect who died in a shoot-out Saturday night with a Huntington Beach police officer had been paroled from prison last month, authorities said Wednesday.

Thomas Albert Oglesby, 21, had been released from the Tehachapi correctional facility on March 7 after serving 20 months of a four-year prison sentence for armed robbery in Los Angeles County. He also had spent time at the Chino men’s facility and San Quentin state prison.

Police said Oglesby, who had been living in North Hollywood since his parole, was fatally wounded in an exchange of gunfire that he and a second suspect had with Sgt. Ed Deuel inside the Things for Your Head shop in the 400 block of Pacific Coast Highway.

Deuel had responded to a silent alarm in the store about 10 p.m., investigators said, and, finding two men inside, he radioed for assistance.

One of the suspects opened fire with a .45-caliber automatic weapon, but it jammed after a single round, police said. Deuel returned the fire, killing the man.

The second suspect then attacked Deuel with what police believe was a sawed-off shotgun, then fled on foot. He is still at large.

Deuel, who was wearing a bullet-proof vest, suffered only minor injuries.
