SUNDAY’S LIVE BROADCAST TO AID USA FOR AFRICA

Share

A three-hour live broadcast benefiting the USA for Africa campaign will air Sunday at noon over 500 U.S. radio stations via the Westwood One Radio network.

All commercial proceeds from the broadcast--featuring such in-studio guests as Rod Stewart, Pat Benatar, Quincy Jones and Smokey Robinson--will be given to the USA for Africa Foundation. A Westwood One spokesman said Friday that the network has already collected $200,000 in sponsor fees for the broadcast and expects to receive another $50,000 before airtime.

In addition, the program’s hosts will be pitching listeners for direct contributions, to be mailed to the USA for Africa Foundation at Box 1985, Los Angeles, 90051. Twelve hosts, including Dick Clark, Dr. Demento and Casey Kasem, will play the entire “We Are the World” record album along with taped interviews with several of the soloists on the “We Are the World” hit single.

Both President Ronald Reagan and Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) had agreed as of Friday to deliver messages during the show.

Billed as “the largest stereo satellite broadcast in history,” the broadcast will air locally over stations KIQQ-FM (100.3), KMET-FM (94.7), KKHR-FM (93.1) and KGIL-FM (94.3).
