Turning Down the Music in Schools

Share

As an Orange resident, I am deeply disturbed at the phasing-out of music for our children at the elementary level. First instrumental music was cut out, now music appreciation, rhythm and singing will essentially disappear. How many other elementary districts are deleting the same cultural program?

In my mail today I received an attractive six-page, photo-filled “newsletter” from the Orange County Performing Arts Center. The irony is the headline, “Countywide Campaign Phase Launched With $6-Million Goal.” Less than 2% of this goal would restore music to the elementary grades of Orange Unified district.

Business needs buyers. The Center had better explore its market and make it its business to maintain music as a core offering in the grammar schools of the Orange district and Orange County to assure its future audiences.
