What fun it was to open the April 14 Times and see Jerry Hulse’s spread on Ferndale. I grew up there, and I can vouch for his having captured the charm and attraction of the place. I love it still.
Jerry’s point about it being far enough off that it can remain aloof from the world is very well taken. It wasn’t until I left there for college that I realized it was a Brigadoon, a place of another time, a place of the heart, all shrouded in fog. Growing up there taught me a way of dealing with people that has never left me: It may seem bizarre, but I treat downtown Los Angeles as if it were a community of about 1,300 people, as Ferndale is now and was then.
I have even begun to suspect that any community of people with a certain yet-to-be-determined number of common interests consists of about 1,300 people. But that is a different story. . . .
