225 Flee Wind-Whipped N. Carolina Forest Fire
About 60 youngsters in a home for troubled children were among at least 225 persons who fled a wind-whipped fire that leaped across the coastal Croatan National Forest on Thursday, officials said.
The children at Camp Sam Hatcher were bused to the Newport Fire Station, and residents of two mobile home parks fled the flames in cars, officials said.
Forestry officials said the fire started behind a school and quickly consumed 3,200 acres. No injuries or major damage was reported.
